TSCC seeks friendly and energetic volunteers who want to teach adults English language skills. Our classes’ help adults gain confidence in communicating in a new language and possibly open doors to new job opportunities. As a volunteer, you would be teaching or assisting a cohort of up to twelve students per class. Teachers highly encouraged!
Goals (Teacher)
- teach TSCC curriculum
- supervise ESL teacher assistant volunteers to deliver a quality program
- administer tests to students & provide data to staff
- provide valuable feedback on how to continuously improve our curriculum
- develop new curriculum when appropriate
- work with staff and communicate any issues in program delivery
Goals (Teacher Assistant)
- assist the ESL teacher
- tutor students during class hours so they do not fall behind
- help prepare materials for students prior to instruction
- provide support to the ESL teacher as needed or requested
Minimum Requirements
- Must have a sincere desire to teach immigrant populations a new language
- Must be at least 18 years of age
- Must have a strong understanding of the English (American) language including proper pronunciation, vocabulary and knowledge of correct grammar usage
Time Commitment
- Monday & Wednesday (Level III) from 6:30 to 8:30 pm
- Tuesday & Thursday (Level I & Level II) from 6:30 to 8:30 pm
- Teachers must commit for 13 weeks (4 hours per week.)
- Teacher Assistants can self select days
Background of ESL students
Many of our students do not understand a word of English. The majority of our students come from low-income backgrounds, and includes a mixture of newly arrived immigrants to long time immigrants from Latin America including Mexico, Nicaragua, Colombia and various other countries. Our student’s ages range from young adult (early 20’s) to older adults (35+).
