TSCC seeks friendly, knowledgeable and professional volunteers who want to help children develop a passion for learning by participating as guest speakers in our classrooms. Our guest speakers can make a lasting impression on a child about issues that affect our society. As a volunteer, you would be under the supervision of a Program Manager and Project Based Learning Leader when you speak with a group of approximately 25-50 children.

Goals

  • present and discuss a topic in the areas of math, science or technology
  • help students take abstract concepts learned during the week and apply them to the real world
  • help students understand how a global/societal issue can impact them directly
  • leave students with at least one way/method they can take action to make a difference

Minimum Requirements

  • Must have a good understanding of the topic to be discussed
  • Must feel comfortable speaking in front of an audience of children (2 nd to 8 th graders)
  • Must be able to ask open ended questions so that children feel comfortable questioning topics
  • Must provide at least 1 professional reference or be a member of the First Unitarian Church
  • Must be at least 18 years of age

Time Commitment

Thursday from 4:30 to 5:30 pm

In addition to the above time commitment, all Guest Speakers must be willing to take time the week before their presentation to speak with or meet with our Program Manager to prepare for their presentation. This is to ensure your presentation makes a connection to our curriculum. Our curriculum starts in September and ends in June. Topics have already been identified. Please refer to the calendar to determine the exact date of the presentation you wish to give.

Background of ASAP Students

The majority of our students come from low income backgrounds with most being bilingual Spanish/English. The ages of our students range from 6 to 14 years. The majority of our students come from Horace Mann Elementary School or the local downtown area.

Special Note – Priority for this volunteer opportunity will be given to members of the First Unitarian Church.
