TSCC seeks energetic and outgoing volunteers who want to help children develop a passion for learning. Our classes provide a wonderful opportunity to make a lasting positive impact in a child’s life. As a volunteer, you would be under the supervision of a Project Based Learning Leader and a Program Manager as you work with a group of up to twenty-five children per class.
Goals (Tutors)
- tutor children in the areas of math, science or technology
- assist children in completing their homework
- help children build science projects based on TSCC curriculum
- help children improve their reading skills
- develop or help lead creative art projects that tie to TSCC curriculum
Goals (Assistants)
- help prepare & distribute healthy snacks to children during our program
- prepare materials for projects in advance
- lead recreational activities at a local park focused on promoting health and exercise
- assist with special event planning such as year end, cultural or seasonal celebrations
- assist staff walk children from Horace Mann Elementary to TSCC
Minimum Requirements
- Must have a sincere desire to teach academically at-risk children
- Must be at least 18 years of age
- Must have a good understanding of the math, science and computers
- Bilingual (Spanish) a plus but not required
Time Commitment
- Monday – Thursday from 1:30 to 6:00 pm
- Every 2 nd & 4 th Fridays from 1:30 to 6:00 pm
- Volunteers can self select days/hours
- For program stability, activities have set days/times
Background of ASAP Students
Many of our students are children of immigrant parents who may have a limited knowledge of English. The majority of our students come from low income backgrounds with most being bilingual Spanish. The ages of our students range from 6 to 14 years. The majority of our students come from Horace Mann Elementary School.
