Another key component of TSCC is our ESL classes for adults. Our classes consist of a 13 week curriculum taught twice a week during the evenings. Childcare is offered in the evenings for parents with young children ( pending funding and a minimum of three requests per class ).
TSCC offers beginner level classes. Our classes teach Basic English language skills and are offered in the fall and spring. Classes are taught by dedicated volunteers with a passion for serving immigrant populations. Volunteers teach in pairs, with new teachers working side by side with a more experienced teacher and teacher assistants.
Students enrolled in our ESL classes learn to take steps towards becoming community leaders, gain marketable skills that can increase their earning potential, and volunteer for TSCC programs. Our approach has proven effective in engaging parents in their children’s education by developing their confidence level and ability to better communicate with their child’s teachers and school administrators. Some parents even begin to co-learn with their children as they take steps towards helping them with their homework. ESL students are strongly encouraged to co-enroll in DECLA.
Basic English Level I – Introduces students to proper pronunciation, vocabulary, adjectives, and basic nouns, pronouns, and verbs. Students are also taught basic phrases that are useful in everyday conversations such as asking for directions, purchasing food, how to tell time, and other phrases as defined by students. This level is appropriate for students with no English skills.
Basic English Level II – This is a continuation of Level I. Students expand their vocabulary and learn to conjugate verbs. This level is appropriate for students with minimal verbal or written English skills.
Basic English Level III – This is a continuation of Level II. This course is fast paced and focused on encouraging students to improve their ability to speak English through practice, repetition and in groups. This level is appropriate for students who have a basic understanding of written English but need to improve their conversational skills.
Our classes are open to parents, young adults or seniors who are interested in giving computers a try or learning English to improve communication skills.
All participants are required to complete an enrollment application and take a brief test to determine which level is appropriate.
